Metcalfe's Double Coupon Changes, Becoming More Restrictive

Metcalfe's Sentry has a new coupon policy effective August 18. NO, they haven't stopped doubling, but they have put a number of restrictions in place that make doubling coupons more difficult and less advantageous. Here's their announcement.

Here are the new rules listed in order of how disappointing they are.

  • $25 minimum purchase required AFTER double coupons (as much as $35 before)
  • Wednesdays ONLY, no more double coupons on Saturday
  • Limit of five double coupons per person per Wednesday
  • First five coupons will be doubled (hand them over in the right order)

These rules have not changed

  • Coupons up to and including $1 will be doubled
  • Limit of three like coupons

What do ya'll think? We have always taken advantage of double coupons because we buy our meat at Metcalfe's. I don't mind the five coupon limit because we don't double many coupons at Sentry, but I'm not sure that we will spend $35 most weeks and we will end up buying our meat elsewhere.

  2. It's true. While every week I see a couple individual bargains with double coupon, the fact that you need to spend $25 after double coupons (as much as $35 before coupons) makes the deals pretty bland. Metcalfe's seems to be focused on a different value proposition. While some of their prices are good, they're not competing on price. their value is in a commitment to service, the environment and their community.
