Weekend Project: Sink Drain Repair

It's time to fix the drain on the kitchen sink. We had slab granite counters installed with a deep double-bowl  under-mount sink. Unfortunately, the drain outlet was originally positioned for much more shallow sink. That means the drain pipe outlet is higher than the new garbage disposal and if you don't know it now, you will as soon as you deal with plumbing and leaks. Water runs downhill, not up.

The water drains from the sink, but it sits in the garbage disposal, so we're going to fix it.

Notice in the photo of the current plumbing the drain outlet (white pipe to the right of disposer) is higher than the drain out of the disposer (white pipe, just above can of comet, coming out of disposer on left)

Here's what we plan to do:
Empty under-sink cabinet
Remove garbage disposal
Disconnect kitchen sink drain
Remove the drain pipe from the basement
Cut it off so its not quite so high
Reinstall the drain pipe
Cut through the back of cabinet to match the shortened pipe
Reconnect plumbing
Install Garbage Disposal
And we're done! We hope
